In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The masthead of any media product is its mark. My product is no exception. I designed my masthead using the forms of music. I used a play and pause button which is on any ipod and CD player. I used green and amber to go with the symbols, play and stop .
My masthead is orginal and connates a ipod. The aspects of the playing and pausing of music and having the choice in our music which is what my magazine has. A variety of music genres that appeals to every reader in my target audience.
I choose the title "LOUD" as it is different and because young people such as my target audience play their music LOUD, and therefore that is where my idea for the name of my magazine came from.
With my images that I took, I replaced the background with bright colours (like the image to the right). I wanted to be different with the mise-en-scene of the images just like I wanted the magazine itself to be like.

In the double page spread, I wrote on the fame of ABBA so I wanted to recreate an photo of the band. First of all I found images of ABBA that I liked and I could possibly recreate (look to the below).

My front cover is a long shot of Ben Whiston (my cousin) to give a concert feel to it as he he is real rock star who plays gigs. The front cover's background is white to connote friendliness. Just like the double page spread the images on the contents page are in coloured boxes which are the magazine's theme colours. Red, green and orange. This theme of colours can also be seen on the double page spread and front cover.

The written content of my article on my double page spread was about ABBA as most of my target audience said they enjoyed ABBA along with other bands/artists from my questionaire. Click here for my survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/MySurvey_EditorFull.aspx?sm=T12ySr1mvwzGL%2bfJL4L94F5g2Xhv6XatNZgWE69aE1M%3d.

I did research on the band first to make sure I got all the information correct and accurate.
This is my first draft: file://fenrir/StudentDataStore1/2012/LLonergan/AS%20Media%20Studies/dps/Review%20on%20Abba%20first%20draft.docx. However, as I looked back on my work I noticed I had made a little error and I corected it.

But, before I wrote the aritcle on ABBA I wrote one on my main cover line about Ben Whiston's world exclusive interview. Here is the draft to it: file://fenrir/StudentDataStore1/2012/LLonergan/AS%20Media%20Studies/dps/First%20Draft%20of%20the%20Interview.docx. I did not need this in the ned as my ABBA was big enough to fill the double page so I decieded to go with it as it seemed like a good story and I really enjoyed writting it as as I am a fan of ABBA.

For my title of double page spread I tried to recreate ABBA's trademark. It gives a personal touch to the double page as ABBA is regconised by millions of people across the world by their tardemark.

On the double page I added a "top 5 ABBA songs" chart. I used to word our instead of LOUD to convey a sense that the reader is part of the article. I used my own favourite ABBA songs to fill this box. I made the ABBA in the title orange to follow the theme that it has been elsewhere on the page. At the bottom I put where the readers could go if they wanted to know more about the band. I put this address in larger size to give it more importance and attracts the reader to read it.

The contents Page has the same colours as the rest of the media products. Red, green and orange. I placed my regular and extra features on the left hand side while my images were placed to right hand side. I used different fonts to show the difference between the regular features in the magazine and the extra articles. I also addeded details of the regulars to give a sort of taster. For my images on the contents I used two pictures that I previously tooked from other photoshoots and one that I took for this particular product.

I tried to give all 3 of my products a youngish feel to it because my target audience is young. I think I did I orginally set out to do which was to create a music magazine of all genres e.g. rock, pop, disco, musicals etc. for a target audience of 12-17 year olds through forms and connentions which can be seen in them.

  1. There are some good points here Lauren but I would like you to look more specifically at some of the central conventions. For example, on the DPS you should explore your use of drop cap, kicker, pull quotes etc. What are they, what are they for and how have you used them?
